Forbes

Oh yeah, it never ends! A week ago, I skied Forbes, my biggest Rocky yet at 3612m. Though I didn’t plan it like this, this is the final peak I’ve skied a line off this year in the Banff-Yoho-Kootenay big boys trifecta. Forbes, the biggest peak wholly within Banff Park, Goodsir S tower representing Yoho and Mt Ball, again, the largest peak fully within Kootenay Park. Mt Ball was an awful day of really bad bush,  driving snow near the summit and legitimately hazardous runnels and crusts on the descent, finally culminating in fatigue-induced hallucinations on the escape, so I didn’t bother writing it up, but Forbes on the other hand, what a beaut of a ski mish! King Edward

Another weekend, another couple days to get rowdy! I felt rested after the road lines of last weekend, and was ready to go on a big overnight push again. I had seen King Edward from Bryce two weeks prior, besides being a gorgeous face and an 11’er, it had a line that was currently filled in right off the summit. So when Ian, my go-to for these overnight excursions said he had some time to ski something, my mind went right to this. Continue reading King Edward

Weekend Militant

So, after a few weekends of long approaches and big packs and bushwhacks, I decided to take it a bit easier this time round and hit up some of the road lines that were still on my list. The first of these was Mt Victoria North Peak’s north face. The face is one of the harder lines to actually inspect prior to going, especially considering the close proximity to the highway and other peaks around. Because of this, I decided against coming up from the Lake Louise side and dropping it off the top into BC, as doing so would allow an inspection of only one of the three steep ice sections. Continue reading Weekend Militant

Bryce

A couple days back, Trevor D. and I headed up Bush River with the intent of skiing Mt Bryce’s south couloir/east face. Mt Bryce is mostly known by skiers for Chris Brazeau’s awesome bold descent of its north face, but the standard mountaineering route is also a worthy goal. Continue reading Bryce

O’Hara

I’ve been wanting to head up to O’Hara for a while, but was just waiting for the right opportunity with enough days of good weather to really make the approach worth it. There’s an astounding amount of sick peaks, with great looking lines, and since most have good west and northerly aspects, they are great options for this late in the season, when the sun comes on strong and quick. Continue reading O’Hara

Arras

I went up last summer to check out Icefall Brook for ski lines. I noticed some crazy looking banana couloirs all over three aspects of Arras. Looking online, it seemed like they would, indeed go. The north facing ones were the real treat, going direct from the summit onto a steep face before dropping into two ice couloirs nestled in between the rock slabs. And with a logging road taking you almost all the way to the base. Continue reading Arras

Avalanche Mountain

Skied this bad boy right after Sifton, but immediately got back on the trip planning horse for the Beaver Glacier trip. So Avalanche kind of slipped between the cracks. And with last weekend finally providing good storm skiing at the resort and this weekend taken up by work, may as well post ‘er up. Cuz after this, I’m back to big trip planning mode, departing in two days for a whole week! Continue reading Avalanche Mountain
